Kelly Gallagher (2009) defines readicide as "...the systematic killing of the love of reading, often exacerbated by the inane, mind-numbing practices found in schools" (p. 2). Specifically, Gallagher suggests that the all-consuming emphasis that schools place on standardized testing has lead to practices that effectively turn students off from reading.
Gallagher notes that these ineffective practices have lead to three major factors which contribute to readicide:
