What is this site all about?
This site was created as an assignment for the READ 6418 class through East Carolina University. The assignment was to choose a professional book in the area of literacy and create a digital book project which gives an overview of the book, highlights important concepts, and links readers to useful links and resources connected to the book's topic. This site is in no way connected to Kelly Gallagher, but merely attempts to highlight some of his notable work in literacy education.
Who is the site administrator/author?
My name is Karen D. Gurley, and I live and teach in Yancey County, which is located in the mountains of Western North Carolina. I graduated from Mars Hill College (now known as Mars Hill University) with a degree in Special Education. I am licensed in K-6 elementary, K-12 special education (general curriculum,) middle school language arts, and middle school math. I teach language arts and math to 6th-8th grade exceptional children and love working with this particular population of students. Their hard work inspires me to continue learning every day, so that I can help them reach their goals.
I am currently seeking a master's degree in reading education (MAEd READ) through East Carolina University. I became interested in earning a graduate degree in reading because of the issues I saw in my own classroom. The numbers of students who were coming to middle school at reading levels as low as first and second grade were concerning. Through the MAEd READ program, I hope to gain a much deeper understanding of the barriers to reading that struggling students face and the best ways to assist them in overcoming those barriers.
